Eureka Literary Magazine Fall 2005 Cover: The Fall 2005 cover design includes a black and white photograph of stained glass windows and a brick interior wall located at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. A larger transparent version of the same photo appear behind the main centered photograph.

Eureka Literary Magazine Spring 2006 Cover: The Spring 2006 cover design includes a black and white photograph of an outdoor scene of a curved brick path along with a series of small water fountains located at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis.

Goal of the Project

While working as a freelance designer in 2005-2006 I had the opportunity to design the covers for the Eureka Literary Magazine publication at Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois. The editor of the magazine, Valerie Perry, Assistant Professor of English, was looking to refresh and redesign their existing cover design.

The Eureka Literary Magazine is produced by staff of Eureka College and includes poetry, prose and short stories submitted for publication. This magazine is produced twice yearly. Information about this magazine can be seen at Eureka Literary Magazine.

For this project I was tasked with coming up with a fresh cover design including original photography as well as a new type treatment for the magazine title.

Solution to the Problem

For the type treatment of the magazine title I chose the Warnock Pro font in the Light Subhead variant. I felt this typeface had the appropriate feel to reflect the literary content of this magazine. This font has a traditional design with its use of thin sculpted serifs and clean, easy to read lettering. The type treatment for the title was designed in Adobe Illustrator CS2.

The photography used are original photos I had taken at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Missouri. The photos were cropped, sized, formatted and made into black and white photos in Adobe Photoshop CS2.

I decided on a clean, simple layout to best represent the new design for the Eureka Literary Magazine. Only necessary elements are included, white space is used appropriately and the publication cover design looks professional and clean. This layout design was performed Adobe InDesign CS2.
