Goal of the Project

For a fourth year in a row, I served as a graphic design volunteer at the McLean County Illinois Branch of the Arthritis Foundation in Normal, Illinois where I designed the Race Day Journal for the 2007 Jingle Bell Run & Walk fundraising event. This year was the 19th annual Jingle Bell Run & Walk event held in Bloomington/Normal, Illinois.

Originally, I had performed a graphic artist internship through the McLean County Branch of the Arthritis Foundation in 2003 performing the page layout and graphic design work on that year's Jingle Bell Run & Walk event Race Day Journal. After this internship finished I volunteered to do this same work for the four years of 2004-2007.

Solution to the Problem

The Race Day Journal was given to all event participants of The Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run & Walk fundraising event. This multipage document served as a guide for the participants displaying the run and walk route map, information about that day's event including the schedule, locations and times. Additionally each event sponsor had an advertisement located throughout this document. Also there was information about Arthritis Foundation programs and services in Central Illinois.

My role as the graphic design volunteer was to assemble all of the information, design the overall page layout, and place each graphic and text into this document layout in Adobe InDesign CS3. I performed resizing and formatting of images using Adobe Photoshop CS3 and created original graphics such as the title page logo and the run and walk route map (seen on page 3 in this document) in Adobe Illustrator CS3.

I also obtained the advertisements from the local event sponsor businesses either through email or in print format and scanned the advertisements into the computer formatting them for inclusion in this document design.

Once the text, layout, and design work was finalized and approved by the Arthritis Foundation McLean County Branch Manager, I took the final PDF work to FedEx Kinko's for reproduction, folding and binding. Covers designed by the National Arthritis Foundation staff were added to the work I performed on the interior pages of this document.
