The Negro Leagues: A Player's Perspective Panel Presentation

The Negro Leagues: A Player's Perspective poster was designed to advertise a public event held on campus at Heartland Community College in which former Negro League baseball players were brought in to speak about their experience during and after segregated baseball in America. The poster shows a black and white photography of 5 American Giants Negro Leagues baseball players on the field along with the event details in the lower half of the poster design.

Goal of the Project

In 2009 I was approached by members of the Diversity Team at Heartland Community College seeking a poster design for a panel presentation of former Negro League baseball players being brought into campus for a presentation. They required an 11x17 poster design as well as a postcard size design to advertise this event.

Solution to the Problem

As a baseball history fan I jumped at the opportunity to perform this graphic design work. I first researched several available images of baseball players from that league and time period. Once I settled on the image of the five players, I used Adobe Photoshop to sharpen the image, selected the players and added a sepia tone to them so they would jump off the page. Then I added the rest of the color, typeface choice and text, and graphics to the lower portion of the poster layout in Adobe Illustrator. The postcard design was a simple reworking of the size of this poster.

My work on this poster earned me a Peer Support Award which I received in 2010 at Heartland Community College.
